High School for Law Enforcement
For many years, GHC 9-1-1 has supported the HISD High School for Law Enforcement. The students in the Emergency Telecommunicator Course receive 135 hours of instruction in two-semesters, (with 16 hours hands-on experience in the GHC training lab). The success of this collaboration is evident in the report from the program director, Mr. Valgene Holmes.
Through an exciting partnership with GHC 9-1-1 , the students at the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice (LE/CJ) have been actively engaged in the field of emergency telecommunications. From previous equipment, to the current Plant equipment, VESTA/MapStar, the students at LE/CJ have strived to become the new industry professionals by heavily concentrating on quality assurance - providing the caller with the proper response and proper resources in an accurate and precise manner.
Since the 2000 school-year, LE/CJ has produced approximately 329 Emergency Telecommunicators. Approximately 95 of these students have been hired by agencies in the GHC 9-1-1 network from 2002-2007. The South Houston PD hired Chris Garza, the first graduate of the program in 2000. Chris is currently a Deputy Sheriff with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Other agencies that have benefited from the LE/CJ program are:
|
1. Arlington PD
2. Bellaire PD
3. Richmond PD
4. Galveston PD
5. Harris County Sheriff's Office
6. Galena Park PD
|
7. Harris County Comm Center
8. Houston Emergency Center
9. Jersey Village PD
10. League City PD
11. West University PD
12. Stafford PD | Currently, approximately 49 students from the LE/CJ program are currently employed at the Houston Emergency Center. Through a new partnership with the Houston Emergency Center (HEC), 13 of these employees are senior students hired on a part-time basis.
Upon graduation, the students enrolled in the Emergency Telecommunicator Course program at LE/CJ are TCLEOSE certified in VESTA/MapStar, Basic Telecommunications, and TCIC/NCIC; and are nationally certified in Emergency Telecommunications through the National Academy of Emergency Dispatchers by their instructor, Valgene Holmes.
